Before we moved into our new [Habitat] home, our family was always under extreme stress. The cost of renting on the South Shore is extreme to say the least. Add to that the shortage of housing. We have moved five times in five years. Our children have had to change schools several times. Our rent was always so high; we always had trouble making ends meet. The basic need of housing was our biggest burden, and the weight of this stress was taking its toll on the our whole family.

Steve BernsteinSteve Bernstein has long been involved in the engineering field, from his days as an undergraduate when he was a member of BSCES/ASCE, to the recent formation of his company SLB Group, LLC. When asked, Steve tells everyone that he is a civil engineer.

Steve first became interested in engineering as a child, always curious to know how things were made and worked. His grandfather taught him about tools and fixing things. His first job was working for a custom home builder while in high school. When he decided to become an engineer, he worked for Norwood Engineering as the "dumb end of the tape." A Massachusetts native, Steve pursued his interest in engineering in college. He earned an AS in building construction from Wentworth Institute of Technology, a BS in civil engineering from UMass Amherst, and an MS in civil engineering from Northeastern University.

He entered the workforce as a staff engineer with Weston & Sampson and worked on water and wastewater projects. He moved to BSC Engineering as a project engineer doing infrastructure and site engineering. He next worked for Anderson-Nichols as a project engineer for heavy infrastructure and then became a vice president and project manager of heavy infrastructure for SEA Consultants. Steve spent the next 16 years working on site engineering, first with JNEI, Inc. (Nitsch) as a senior project manager. He joined Green Environmental as vice president and project manager, spent 11 years with Daylor Consulting Group as president and COO, and was a principal at Stantec Consulting for the past two years.

The states in which Steve is a registered professional engineer include all of the New England states plus Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, reflecting the wide variety of projects he has been involved with over his career. He's also a certified septic system inspector and certified soil evaluator in Massachusetts.

Steve has served the profession in a number of capacities and been recognized by the engineering community with several prestigious awards: ASCE Fellow and the Ralph Horn and Lestor Gaynor awards from BSCES. He chaired the BSCES student committee and was president of the organization in 1987-1988. He worked on numerous ASCE committees from 1984 to 1994. Steve is appreciative of the BSCES, commenting that: "the society has introduced me to thousands of fellow engineers and friends who have helped to make me the person I am today."

His other affiliations include American Public Works Association, New England Water Works Association/AWWA, New England Water Environment Association, and MA Society of Professional Engineers/National Society of Professional Engineers. In the community, he was president of Temple Beth Am from 2001 to 2003 and has been the longtime chair of both the house and endowment committees. He serves on the board of directors of South Shore Habitat for Humanity and has chaired the site selection committee since 2007. Steve noted: "I have always believed in giving back to the community. South Shore Habitat is a great organization; we build affordable houses in 35 towns for those who really need a safe, affordable home to raise a family. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a family move into its new home, especially around the holidays."

Key projects Steve has worked on are the Opera House in Boston, which required thorough renovation to be brought back to life to reopen in 2004; building a $5M estate house on Nantucket that involved extensive design issues with water supply, permitting, and stormwater systems; and construction of Linden Ponds, a retirement community in Hingham, with planning for 2,000+ units on a 108-acre site and complicated utility design and permitting. Steve prepared many of the water supply and treatment related schematic designs for a new Arts and Science University in Pakistan, where control by the military and government added to the challenges of the project.

A list of Steve's publications includes: "Solving a Summer Camp's Wastewater Problem," "The Fair Housing Act: Making your Multifamily Project Handicap Accessible," "The Bible of Resident Project Representation," "Taking ‘Emerging Leader' as a Leader," and "Don't Panic Over Title 5." He likes to write and present a paper every so often to share his expertise and lessons learned.

Steve's family includes his wife, Carol, to whom he has been married for almost 40 years, his son Jeremy and wife Eileen, and two grandsons, Alex and Marley, who he finds a lot of fun. He enjoys traveling, recently to Switzerland, reading, playing golf, and woodworking. He expects his son and daughter-in-law's newly purchased home to test his carpentry skills to the fullest.

Steve has just launched his own company, SLB Group, LLC, which provides general civil engineering consulting. Company specialties include site and septic system design, drainage improvements, permitting, peer reviews, construction administration services, as well as expert witness services on civil engineering issues. BSCES wishes Steve well in this most recent step in his career as a civil engineer.
